Airyn De Niro, the 29-year-old daughter of Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro, recently shared her journey of coming out as transgender and starting hormone therapy in an interview with Them, an LGBTQ magazine. She described feeling out of place throughout her life, often grappling with societal expectations. Airyn recalled being told she was “too much” or “not enough” in various aspects, leading to a sense of inadequacy.
Drawing inspiration from prominent transgender women like Laverne Cox and Marsha P. Johnson, she found courage to embrace her femininity last year. Airyn emphasized the impact of seeing trans women succeed and being open about their experiences, which encouraged her to reconsider her own identity. This journey also led her to connect deeply with her Black ancestry, inspired by Black womanhood.
One of her first public expressions of her gender identity was getting dreadlocks, inspired by Halle Bailey in the 2023 live-action “The Little Mermaid.” Despite being the child of celebrities, Airyn acknowledged her parents’ efforts to protect her from the media spotlight and encouraged her autonomy in choosing her career path. Now, she aims to use her visibility to inspire others, particularly during a time when transgender rights are increasingly under threat.
Airyn is currently pursuing a career in mental health counseling, driven by a desire to advocate for marginalized communities, particularly people of color and queer individuals. She believes there is a pressing need for better mental health support within these groups, and she hopes to contribute significantly to this vital area.
