Texas High School Football Set for Technological Upgrades in 2025
Starting in the 2025 season, Texas high school football will embrace significant advancements approved by the University Interscholastic League (UIL). Teams will be permitted to utilize wearable technology, such as watches, belt packs, and wrist bands, to facilitate play-calling. This innovative method could enhance communication and execution on the field.
However, the new policy comes with restrictions. The devices function as one-way communication tools, allowing coaches to send plays but prohibiting player feedback. Additionally, coaches must operate from a booth rather than the sidelines when using these devices. There is no cap on the number of players who can wear the technology during games. It’s important to note that while Texas high schools can implement this change, they will not adopt in-helmet communication, as they adhere to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules rather than those set by the National Federation of State High School Associations.
In tandem with these advancements, UIL has also approved the use of Guardian Caps, designed to reduce head trauma injuries, provided they match the primary color of team helmets. While the integration of wearable technology and Guardian Caps presents new opportunities for enhancing player safety and communication, the implementation is ultimately at the discretion of individual schools.
For some high school football programs, particularly those with extensive resources, adopting this technology may streamline operations and communication. However, smaller schools may face challenges in incorporating these costly tools. As Texas football evolves with these upgrades, the impact on teams will vary widely, shaping the future of the sport in the Lone Star State.
