Trump Uncertain About El Salvador’s Return of Kilmar Ábrego García and Claims He Hasn’t Inquired – Live Updates | US News

Trump Uncertain on El Salvador’s Response to Controversial Deportation

In a press briefing on Wednesday, President Donald Trump expressed uncertainty regarding El Salvador’s willingness to return Kilmar Ábrego García, a man mistakenly deported from Maryland. Trump’s comments followed a recent Supreme Court ruling mandating the administration to facilitate Ábrego García’s return but revealed a lack of direct communication with El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele.

During a cabinet meeting, a reporter cited Trump’s prior remarks in an ABC News interview, where he mentioned he "could" secure Ábrego García’s return but chose not to. Trump conveyed, “I don’t know. I haven’t spoken to him. I really leave that to the lawyers,” emphasizing reliance on legal experts for compliance with court orders.

Reports from The New York Times indicated that the Trump administration had sent a diplomatic note to inquire about the release of Ábrego García. However, Bukele’s administration reportedly dismissed the request, arguing that he should remain in El Salvador, where he is recognized as a citizen.

The Trump administration’s handling of the situation has drawn scrutiny from legal experts, with some suggesting the diplomatic efforts could be a façade to demonstrate compliance with the Supreme Court demands without genuine intent to facilitate Ábrego García’s return, especially after he was deported despite a protection order against such actions.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem echoed Trump’s stance, stating that if Ábrego García were returned to the U.S., he would face immediate deportation again, given his status as a Salvadoran national.

As pressure mounts, a federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to provide details about their efforts to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling, underscoring growing tensions surrounding the administration’s immigration policies.
