Fayetteville, Ark. — The University of Arkansas is now embroiled in a lawsuit linked to a hacking scheme allegedly orchestrated by Matt Weiss, a former coach at the University of Michigan. Reports indicate that Weiss, indicted in March for computer crimes, misused a compromised database to access sensitive medical and personal data of over 150,000 athletes.
Weiss, who had a controversial tenure as offensive coordinator at Michigan, is accused of exploiting his connections dating back to his previous role with the Baltimore Ravens. Legal representatives for multiple former Razorback athletes claim he accessed intimate photos and videos of several female athletes, targeting them based on their school affiliations and physical characteristics.
During interviews, Meagan Bonanni, an attorney representing the athletes, highlighted a significant "lack of security protocol" at the University of Arkansas. She expressed that the university’s failure to safeguard sensitive information has left former athletes feeling betrayed, as their personal data was not adequately protected.
The indictment reveals that Weiss meticulously documented his findings regarding the athletes, including comments about their appearances and sexual preferences. Thousands of explicit images and videos have been recovered from Weiss’s devices, many depicting victims in compromising situations.
As the investigation unfolds, more women are expected to come forward, potentially widening the scope of the lawsuits. Attorney Jon Marko, representing at least 40 victims, emphasized that this is merely "the tip of the iceberg." He anticipates further revelations that may highlight deeper issues within the athletic program and its handling of sensitive information.
The University of Arkansas is now under scrutiny as the lawsuits indicate a pattern of negligence in protecting its athletes’ private information, raising questions about accountability in collegiate sports.
