Meet the Candidates for Michigan Governor

Michigan Gubernatorial Race Heats Up as Candidates Emerge

As Michigan’s Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer approaches the end of her second term, a competitive field is emerging for the 2026 gubernatorial election. A host of candidates, both seasoned politicians and newcomers, are stepping forward to vie for the state’s top office, indicating a dynamic political landscape ahead.

Among the prominent names is Jocelyn Benson, the current Secretary of State, who announced her candidacy in January. Benson has highlighted her achievements in reducing wait times for state services and is campaigning on a platform of accountability and progressive reforms for Michigan families.

Former Attorney General Mike Cox also joined the race, advocating a "Make Michigan Great Again" theme. With a history of statewide electoral experience and a focus on law and justice issues, Cox aims to reshape Michigan into an example for other states.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, an experienced leader who has played a vital role in revitalizing the city post-bankruptcy, announced his run as an Independent after pledging not to seek reelection as mayor. His extensive background includes significant roles in the medical sector and local governance.

Garlin Gilchrist, Michigan’s first Black lieutenant governor, is running with a vision to continue progressive initiatives, including criminal justice reform and innovation support for startups. Should he win, Gilchrist would be the first Black governor in Michigan’s history.

Other candidates include U.S. Congressman John James, Michigan state Senator Aric Nesbitt, and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, each bringing unique backgrounds and policy proposals to the table. James emphasizes a reflective approach to governance, while Nesbitt and Swanson focus on conservative values and public safety reform respectively.

As the 2026 race takes shape, Michigan voters can expect a diverse array of candidates offering distinct visions for the state’s future.
