Michigan State University Athletic Director Alan Haller Announces Departure
EAST LANSING, Mich. – In a significant leadership change, Michigan State University’s Athletic Director Alan Haller will be leaving his post after more than three years. The university officially announced Haller’s departure on Thursday, May 1, with his final day slated for May 11.
Appointed as vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics in September 2021, Haller has made a notable impact during his tenure. Under his guidance, Spartan teams in men’s basketball, women’s soccer, women’s gymnastics, men’s ice hockey, and women’s cross country have each clinched Big Ten championships. His administration has also emphasized academic achievement, culminating in a historic milestone as Spartan athletes recorded the highest cumulative GPA in the athletic department’s history at 3.4324 in 2024.
President Kevin M. Guskiewicz expressed gratitude for Haller’s leadership, recognizing the success and integrity he brought to the program. “I’m grateful for Alan’s leadership since I joined the university and appreciate the success our programs have seen under his guidance,” Guskiewicz stated.
In the interim period leading up to the appointment of a permanent successor, Deputy Athletic Director Jennifer Smith and men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo will step in as acting athletic directors. The search for a new director is set to commence shortly.
Haller’s departure marks the end of a transformative era for Michigan State athletics, blending competitive success with academic excellence. As the university prepares for a new chapter, the legacy left by Haller will resonate through the programs he has shaped.
