Michigan State University’s Athletic Director Alan Haller Announces Departure
Michigan State University (MSU) announced that Vice President and Athletic Director Alan Haller will step down from his position on May 11, 2025, after less than four years in the role. In a statement conveyed through his attorneys, Haller expressed his commitment to advocating for students and the university, acknowledging the challenges he faced due to differing views with influential figures.
Haller’s time at MSU coincided with significant transformations in college athletics, along with several notable incidents within the university’s sports programs. He recruited football coach Mel Tucker, who was later replaced by Jonathan Smith following a sexual misconduct investigation. Under Haller’s leadership, the football program struggled, recording losses in four of the past five seasons, although he also appointed successful coaches for the hockey and women’s basketball teams. During his tenure, MSU celebrated Big Ten championships across several sports, including men’s basketball and women’s gymnastics.
In his statement, Haller reflected on his 32 years at MSU, initially as a student-athlete and later in various roles, expressing pride in his contributions. "Serving as Vice President and Director of Athletics at Michigan State University has been one of the greatest honors of my life," he stated, thanking the Spartan community for their support.
Following Haller’s announcement, men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo and deputy athletic director Jennifer Smith are set to act as interim athletic directors while the university conducts a national search in collaboration with search firm TurnkeyZRG. The Spartan community now prepares for a new chapter in its athletic leadership, as Haller looks back on a legacy marked by both triumphs and trials.
