Rubio: Iran Should Completely Halt All Uranium Enrichment

During a recent interview, Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the necessity for Iran to abandon uranium enrichment and long-range missile development as well as to permit American inspectors access to its facilities. His remarks came as negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program faced significant challenges, with the next round of talks postponed. President Donald Trump has threatened military action against Iran if no agreement is reached.

Rubio highlighted the various actions Iran needs to take to move forward, including ceasing support for terrorism, halting assistance to the Houthis in Yemen, and dismantling its missile program, which he argued serves no purpose other than facilitating nuclear armament. The Iranian government, however, has consistently refused to relinquish its missile program or uranium enrichment capabilities.

On Thursday, an Iranian official confirmed the postponement of the scheduled talks in Rome, stating that new dates would depend on the U.S. approach. Rubio suggested that instead of enriching uranium domestically, Iran should import it for its nuclear energy needs, arguing that domestic enrichment poses risks of rapidly developing weapons-grade material. He noted that achieving enrichment levels necessary for a bomb could be alarmingly quick.

Iran maintains that it is entitled to enrich uranium under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and insists that it has no intentions of developing nuclear weapons. Furthermore, Rubio asserted that any inspection regime would need to include American oversight and allow inspectors unfettered access to all Iranian facilities, including military sites. This statement reflects the ongoing tensions and fundamental disagreements that persist in the U.S.-Iran negotiations regarding nuclear capabilities.
