The NFL often sees undrafted free agents (UDFAs) make significant contributions, and anticipation is swirling around which player will step up in 2025. In a recent assessment by The Athletic’s Nick Baumgardner, Michigan running back Donovan Edwards emerged as a standout choice for the New York Jets.
Edwards, a 205-pound athlete, made a name for himself at Michigan despite serving primarily as a backup throughout his college career. Baumgardner noted that while Edwards often struggled with vision between tackles, his agility and explosiveness make him a potential asset for the Jets. During the final three games of the 2022 season, after star running back Blake Corum was sidelined due to injury, Edwards showcased his capabilities by rushing for over 119 yards in each contest.
However, Edwards faced challenges in 2023. Following Corum’s return, he was relegated to second on the depth chart and eventually overtaken by former linebacker Kalel Mullings, who secured the top spot in 2024. Despite limited opportunities to shine in his final seasons, Edwards demonstrated his talent, particularly in the passing game. His impressive freshman performance against Maryland, where he caught 10 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown, highlighted his potential as a versatile weapon.
With the Jets’ primary running back, Breece Hall, established as the starter, Edwards is poised to carve out a role as a pass-catching back. As the team reshapes its roster, all eyes will be on Edwards to see if he can make an immediate impact in the NFL.
