Michigan Softball Falls 4-0 to Minnesota in Series Opener
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The University of Michigan softball team faced a tough start in their series opener against Minnesota, suffering a 4-0 defeat on Friday evening at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
Minnesota’s offense struck early, with a two-run homer in the first inning, followed by a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch that put the Gophers ahead 3-0 in the second. Michigan (32-19, 9-11 Big Ten) struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities throughout the game, failing to score despite recording three hits.
Ellie Sieler was the standout for Michigan, collecting all three hits, including a double in the seventh inning. Despite her efforts, the Wolverines stranded five runners on base, demonstrating their frustration at the plate.
On the pitching front, Erin Hoehn took the loss, allowing four runs—three earned—on seven hits, with two walks and four strikeouts. Although Hoehn faced an uphill battle early on, she found her rhythm mid-game, retiring six consecutive batters before an unearned run crossed the plate in the fifth inning, extending Minnesota’s lead to 4-0.
The Wolverines had their chances, notably when Sieler’s seventh-inning double brought hope. However, despite advancing to third, Michigan could not muster a run, ending the game with a strikeout.
The shutout marked just the second of the season for Michigan, highlighting their need for offensive improvement as they look ahead. The Wolverines will continue their weekend series against Minnesota with a game scheduled for Saturday, May 3, at 1 p.m. CT, which will be streamed live on B1G+.
