Michigan Law Enforcement Issues Warning About Unpaid Toll Scams
Michigan law enforcement and transportation officials are alerting residents to a new scam targeting drivers. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has reported instances of fraudulent messages that mimic official correspondence about unpaid tolls. These messages, which claim to notify recipients of outstanding toll invoices, direct individuals to a website that differs from the official michigan.gov domain.
MDOT stresses that these communications are not legitimate and points out that the state does not manage any toll roads. While the department collects tolls at the Blue Water, International, and Mackinac bridges, any invoices for these services are sent via traditional mail—not through text messages.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has emphasized that the state will never ask for sensitive personal information or demand payments via email, phone calls, or texts. Additionally, legitimate requests for payment will never use methods like prepaid gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or payment apps.
Residents are advised to exercise caution and report any suspicious texts. Those who receive these scam messages can report them to the Federal Trade Commission or forward them to the number 7726 for further investigation. Anyone with concerns about toll payments can contact MDOT directly at 517-241-2400 or through their official email address.
Recent awareness campaigns from local law enforcement agencies, such as those in Northville Township, have shed light on similar scams, underlining the community’s need to stay vigilant against deceptive practices. As these scams continue to proliferate, officials encourage residents to stay informed and report fraudulent activities promptly.
