Magnitude-5.3 Earthquake Among Three Quakes to Rattle Remote West Texas

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck West Texas on Saturday night at 7:47 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Located about 35 miles south of Whites City, New Mexico, the quake occurred roughly midway between Midland and El Paso, at a depth of nearly 4 miles. The region’s sparse population resulted in minimal impact on residents, and the USGS indicated that ground failure, landslides, and liquefaction were unlikely.

This earthquake is part of a series of 46 mostly minor quakes that have occurred in the area since early April. Following the 5.3 magnitude event, there is a 65% probability of a significant aftershock within the next week. Alongside the primary quake, Saturday night also saw two other notable tremors with magnitudes of 3.4 and 2.9. Responses collected through the USGS’s “Did You Feel It” list included reports from various Texas cities, including Arlington, Midland, and Lubbock, highlighting the tremor’s extensive reach.

Fortunately, no injuries or significant damage have been reported following the earthquake. The event underscores the geological activity in the region, prompting continued monitoring and research by the USGS to assess future risks and provide timely information to residents.
