Huskies Split Doubleheader Against Eastern Michigan
YPSILANTI, Mich. – Northern Illinois University’s baseball team showcased resilience by splitting a doubleheader against the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Saturday at Oestrike Stadium. The Huskies bounced back from a tough 13-3 loss in the opener to secure a commanding 17-1 victory in game two, clinching the series.
Head Coach Ryan Copeland praised the team’s response following the first game setback. “It was a good response… We just had to go win the series,” he stated. Star pitcher Carter Cox delivered a stellar performance in game two, pitching six innings while striking out nine and allowing only one run on three hits.
The Huskies (18-29, 7-17 MAC) ignited their offense in the second inning of game two. Ben Loyd opened with a single, followed by consecutive walks and key RBIs from Kyle Hartmann and Charlie Parcell, putting them ahead 3-0. A seven-run third inning further solidified their lead, highlighted by a three-run double from Gavin Baldwin.
NIU continued its offensive barrage, adding multiple runs in the fourth and sixth innings. The game concluded with an impressive power display, including back-to-back doubles from Cohn and Loyd.
In contrast, game one was more challenging for the Huskies. Eastern Michigan (18-23, 10-14 MAC) initially took the lead and ultimately won after an eight-run explosion in the fourth inning.
Looking ahead, the Huskies will aim to build on their momentum when they host Illinois State on Tuesday, May 6, at 2 PM at Ralph McKinzie Field.
The split improves NIU’s chances as they gear up for the final stretch of the season. Coach Copeland emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and continued improvement as they approach upcoming challenges.
