Ukrainian Soldier Triumphs at Invictus Games in Canada
Vancouver, British Columbia – Oleksii Tiunin, a Ukrainian veteran who lost his leg in the ongoing conflict with Russia, captained the Ukrainian national team at the Invictus Games, held in Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia. This year saw the largest Ukrainian delegation participate, with Tiunin leading a team of 35 injured soldiers to an impressive total of 30 medals, securing fourth place overall after powerhouse teams from the U.S., U.K., and Australia.
At 37, Tiunin reflects on his difficult journey after sustaining severe injuries during a 2023 battle near Andriivka, Donetsk region. Initially doubtful about participating in such events during his rehabilitation, he found strength in the spirit of the games, stating, “We came here to have fun and showcase the strength of the Ukrainian people.”
Competing not just for victory but for camaraderie, Tiunin expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from Canadians. “The respect we received was deeply moving, tied to the ongoing war in our country,” he noted, underscoring the unique bond formed between the Ukrainian team and the local community.
Among the standout athletes was Serhii Hordiievych, also a Ukrainian veteran, who clinched a gold medal in alpine skiing despite grappling with a spinal cord injury. His inspirational journey to competing in the games was aided by fellow combatants and the enduring encouragement of his wife, who pushed him to pursue his sporting aspirations.
Hordiievych’s newfound dedication to skiing is a testament to resilience, with plans to continue competing in alpine skiing and table tennis. Both men embody the indomitable spirit of their nation, proving that with determination, even in the face of adversity, hope and triumph are attainable.
