Michigan Recovery Support Organization Reaches Out to Community Following Federal Funding Cuts

Recovery Advocates in Livingston Seek Community Support After Funding Cuts

Livingston, MI – Recovery Advocates in Livingston (RAIL) is calling on the community for assistance following significant cuts to its federal funding, which play a crucial role in their operations. Matthew Barton, a coordinator with RAIL, expressed his dismay over the abrupt reduction in financial support, stemming from cuts to the American Rescue Plan initiated under the Trump Administration earlier this year. "It was terrible news because it is definitely a large part of our funding structure," Barton stated, highlighting the impact these cuts have had on their recovery house in Howell.

To sustain their sober house, RAIL is actively soliciting donations. A generous anonymous donor has pledged to match contributions up to $20,000, amplifying the call for community support. "The stop work order will definitely put the house in jeopardy," Barton noted, explaining the organization is currently operating on a month-to-month basis using funds from Community Mental Health Services of Livingston County.

The recovery house, which accommodates six women, is staffed around the clock to provide essential support. Each bed costs approximately $500 per month to maintain. "These women need stability; they need to focus on their recovery and their sobriety," Barton emphasized, stressing the detrimental effects that the looming threat of homelessness could have on their progress.

Despite the challenges posed by funding uncertainty, Barton remains committed to supporting these women in their recovery journey. "No matter what happens in Washington or in Lansing, these women’s lives continue in Howell," he affirmed. The organization’s immediate goal is to ensure that the recovery house remains a sanctuary for women striving for sobriety and a better life.
