American College of Lifestyle Medicine Launches New CME/CE Course on Using Food as Medicine to Decrease Cancer Incidence and Recurrence

New Course on Nutrition Aims to Combat Cancer

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) has launched an accredited course designed to equip clinicians with the latest evidence-based strategies for using food as medicine in cancer prevention and management. With nearly 40% of new cancer cases in U.S. adults over 30 attributed to preventable factors—including diet—the course seeks to empower healthcare providers to leverage nutritional therapy effectively.

Participants will gain insights into prevalent nutrition practices associated with cancer therapy, guidelines for nutritional optimization, and strategies for applying food-based interventions to enhance patient health outcomes. This includes education on the role of nutrition in both cancer prevention and survivorship.

Dr. Nathalie D. McKenzie, Director of Gynecologic Oncology at AdventHealth Cancer Institute, emphasized the significance of this initiative: “Cancer is complex, but the evidence is clear that nutrition plays a crucial role in prevention and survivorship. This new course enables clinicians to integrate practical dietary approaches into their care practices.”

The ACLM has been pivotal in advancing lifestyle medicine in medical education, having dedicated over 1.2 million hours to training health professionals since 2004. This course, part of a broader series on Food as Medicine (FAM), addresses critical issues including treatment, risk reduction, and conditions like type 2 diabetes.

By focusing on the fundamentals of lifestyle medicine, ACLM aims to mitigate the escalating chronic disease crisis in the U.S. Its ongoing commitment to education serves as a crucial resource for healthcare providers striving to promote holistic, preventative care.
