Authorities are investigating the suspected bear attack that led to the deaths of 89-year-old Robert Markel and his dog in Jerome, Collier County, Florida. The bodies were discovered at Markel’s home shortly after 7 a.m. on Monday. According to George Reynaud, a spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Markel and his dog were found in separate locations within a few hundred yards of each other. Initially, it has been confirmed that a bear attack occurred; however, it remains unclear whether the same bear was responsible for both deaths or if multiple bears were involved.

The wildlife commission believes that the bear involved is likely a Florida black bear, the only bear species native to the state, which has an estimated population of around 4,050.
