Quest High School Educator Named Michigan Teacher of the Year
NORTH BRANCH, MI — Corey Rosser, an enthusiastic educator at Quest High School in Lapeer County, was named Michigan Teacher of the Year on May 6, coinciding with Teacher Appreciation Week. With over two decades of experience, Rosser received the prestigious honor in a surprise ceremony led by Michigan State Superintendent Michael Rice.
Rosser, who transitioned from a business major to teaching after working at a juvenile detention center, expressed his gratitude, stating, “It’s surreal… I don’t feel I’m any more deserving than anyone else.” Throughout his tenure at Quest, approximately 580 students have graduated, and he continually emphasizes the importance of meeting diverse student needs.
Superintendent Rice highlighted the impact of dedicated teachers, inviting students to share stories about their favorite educators. These personal anecdotes underscored the power of impactful teaching, a mission Rosser embraces passionately.
Early in his career, Rosser faced challenges in establishing connections in alternative education, but he credits mentors like retired Program Coordinator Georgette Aguilar for shaping his approach to teaching. Aguilar recalled Rosser as “very teachable” as they navigated the complexities of alternative education.
An integral part of Rosser’s method includes daily roundtable discussions with students, fostering a sense of trust and community. His family, including his wife Carrie and children, have been pivotal to his journey, with Carrie noting his selflessness in prioritizing student needs.
In recognition of his achievements, the Meemic Foundation awarded Quest High School a $1,000 grant to support its programs. The Michigan Teacher of the Year program identifies outstanding educators through a rigorous nomination and selection process, with Rosser representing Region 5, encompassing several counties.
Reflecting on his career, Rosser said, “To see [former students] thriving is probably my favorite part.”
