Press Article: Michigan Law Enforcement Honors Fallen Officers
LANSING, Mich. — Law enforcement officers from across Michigan gathered at the state capitol on Monday for a poignant remembrance ceremony honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Organized by the Michigan chapter of Concern of Police Survivors (MI COPS), the event commemorated five deputies who lost their lives in 2024, as well as four additional fallen officers.
Among those honored was Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Deputy Bill Butler Jr., who tragically died last summer. His wife, Sarah Butler, participated in the ceremony, placing a flower on the memorial wreath. "There’s people here that felt the pain that I felt," she remarked, emphasizing the shared grief among families of fallen officers. In her husband’s honor, the Hillsdale community has established a scholarship aimed at supporting new recruits aspiring to follow in Deputy Butler’s footsteps in law enforcement.
MI COPS President Brian Rendon highlighted the significance of the gathering, stating it offers healing and comfort to the families who have lost loved ones. "It’s just a testament to how many people care for officers," Rendon noted, expressing pride at the turnout.
The families of the officers honored during the ceremony are set to travel to Washington, D.C. next week for National Police Week, where the names of the nine deputies will be etched into the National Police Memorial.
This heartfelt ceremony serves as a vital reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement professionals and the support that continues to surround their families and communities.
