Michigan Football’s Sign-Stealing Scandal: Coach Suspension Looms
The Michigan Wolverines football program is bracing for the fallout from the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal, with head coach Sherrone Moore likely facing a two-game suspension in 2025. This decision comes in light of allegations that Moore did not fully cooperate with the NCAA’s investigation into the sign-stealing practices purportedly orchestrated under former coach Jim Harbaugh in 2023. The Associated Press reports that Moore’s suspension will likely impact the team’s third and fourth games against Central Michigan on September 13 and Nebraska on September 20.
Additional repercussions include a self-imposed sanction from the Michigan program, details of which have yet to be disclosed. The Wolverines had a strong season, finishing undefeated, yet the controversy has overshadowed their achievements. While the NCAA does not prohibit sign stealing, they explicitly disallow sending scouts to future opponents’ games or utilizing electronic devices for recording signals.
Stalions, a former Michigan staffer, is implicated in the scandal for allegedly purchasing tickets to opponents’ games to gain insights into their signals. After resigning, he did not participate in the NCAA investigation. The NCAA has accused Moore, who was an assistant under Harbaugh, of violating regulations by deleting messages linked to Stalions, which were later recovered for the investigation.
Despite the turmoil, Moore, in his first full season as head coach, secured an 8-5 record and has bolstered recruiting efforts, positioning the Wolverines as strong contenders in the Big Ten next season. The team is set to kick off its campaign against New Mexico State on August 30.
