Western Michigan Sweeps Doubleheader Against Central Michigan
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In an impressive display of baseball, Western Michigan University completed a clean sweep of Central Michigan University by winning both games of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Robert J. Bobb Stadium. Following a commanding 6-0 victory in the opener, the Broncos clinched the series with a 4-2 win in the nightcap.
The Broncos’ offense showcased their prowess with nine hits, all singles, and garnered five walks, ultimately breaking a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning by scoring two critical runs. Western Michigan’s success was marked by a strong performance from Joey Wizceb, who dominated the mound in the first game, allowing just three hits while striking out three batters.
Central Michigan struggled throughout the doubleheader, with their record now sitting at 17-30 overall and 9-15 in the MAC, placing them eighth in the conference standings. The Chippewas’ path to the upcoming conference tournament becomes more challenging as only the top six teams qualify.
During Saturday’s second game, CMU scored both of its runs in the sixth inning, initiated by Aaron Piasecki’s single and Cayden Smith being hit by a pitch. Despite a valiant effort, including a timely double from Cole Kwiatkowski, the Chippewas fell short.
CMU’s Hayden Bailey took the loss despite a strong outing, allowing three runs and striking out seven. The Chippewas will next face Michigan in a nonconference game on May 6, followed by a crucial three-game series against Eastern Michigan from May 9-11. With only six MAC games remaining, the team’s quest for a tournament spot intensifies.
