Northern Michigan Christian School Students Engage in Hands-On Science with Chicks and Ducks

MCBAIN, MI — Students at Northern Michigan Christian School experienced an exciting day of science as they interacted with newly hatched chicks and ducks, thanks to the Missaukee County 4-H program. Program Coordinator Sue Beerens facilitated the event, bringing live birds to the school’s science lab, allowing elementary and middle school students to get up close with these adorable animals.

During the interactive session, elementary students engaged in hands-on activities to learn about the differences and similarities between chicks and ducks. They explored the birds’ physical characteristics and eating habits, fostering a deeper understanding of the avian species.

Meanwhile, middle school students shifted their focus to the marketplace aspect of poultry. Beerens provided insights into how birds like chickens and turkeys are processed and sold, drawing connections between farm life and grocery store realities. This dual approach not only educated students about animal biology but also the agricultural industry surrounding them.

The lively event offered students a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world applications, enhancing their understanding of both science and agricultural practices. Through this program, Northern Michigan Christian School continues its commitment to hands-on learning experiences that cultivate curiosity and knowledge among its students.

This engaging initiative exemplifies the importance of community partnerships in enriching educational experiences, demonstrating how local resources like the Missaukee County 4-H program can make a lasting impact on the youth of the region.
