Ohio State Icon Urban Meyer Shares Surprising Insights on Michigan Scandals

Urban Meyer Weighs In on Michigan’s Sign-Stealing Scandal

Urban Meyer, a Toledo native and former head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, has shared strong sentiments regarding the recent sign-stealing scandal involving Ohio State’s biggest rival, the University of Michigan. During a recent episode of "The Triple Option," Meyer expressed his views on the importance of ethical standards in college football, asserting that lying to the NCAA should result in immediate termination for coaches.

The scandal escalated with the announcement that Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore would be suspended for two games in the 2025 season as a self-imposed sanction, during which the team will face Central Michigan and Nebraska. Meyer emphasized that this punishment, along with others in college sports, does not go far enough in addressing the gravity of such violations. He stated, "When they got you and say ‘did you do this,’ and they refuse to cooperate or they lie, you’re finished coaching in Division I."

Drawing on historical precedents where the NCAA vacated wins or even stripped championships from programs, Meyer noted that these measures lack real consequences. "What does it matter to vacate wins from years ago? That has no impact," he argued.

To truly mitigate issues like sign-stealing, Meyer believes more severe repercussions are necessary. He suggested that the termination of involved coaches would send a crucial message and effectively deter such unethical practices. "The risk now is too high, and I don’t think you ever see this kind of stuff again," he concluded. Meyer’s comments reflect a growing frustration with handling integrity violations in college athletics, urging for more decisive action to safeguard the sport’s reputation.
