Michigan House Approves $100 Million Aid for Northern Michigan Ice Storm Recovery
LANSING — In a decisive move, the Michigan House has greenlit a $100 million proposal aimed at supporting Northern Michigan’s recovery from the devastating ice storm that struck in March. The legislation, known as HB 4328, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, achieving a vote count of 107-1.
Representative Parker Fairbairn (R) of District 107, representing Harbor Springs, emphasized that this funding could unlock an additional $300 million in federal matching funds. “This will signal to the federal government that the state is prepared to act, covering 25% of the costs,” he stated.
The approved funding will be allocated among the 12 counties that were declared under states of emergency in the aftermath of the storm. Initially proposed at $75 million, Fairbairn’s final bill now includes an additional $25 million to be deployed for recovery efforts once the primary allocation is utilized.
Allen Ballard, the public information officer for Crawford County, highlighted the urgent need for financial relief. “This funding would enable us to assist residents coping with unexpected expenses from repairs, debris removal, and fuel costs,” he said. He pointed out that many senior citizens and individuals with physical limitations face significant challenges in managing their property damage.
The passage of this bill marks a critical step in aiding Michiganders affected by the ice storm, offering much-needed relief to those in desperate situations. “I urge my fellow lawmakers to support this bill to uplift our community members facing hardships,” Fairbairn added.
The proposal now awaits approval from the state Senate and Governor Gretchen Whitmer before it can be enacted.
