Michigan’s Climate Commitment Amid Federal Uncertainty
At the recent MI Healthy Climate Conference, attendees grappled with the anxiety surrounding national climate policies, particularly as President Donald Trump moved to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement. Phil Roos, director of Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), recalled how the state faced similar challenges when Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist took office in 2019.
Despite the turbulent political climate, Whitmer’s administration aligned Michigan with the U.S. Climate Alliance, reinforcing the state’s commitment to sustainable development. Significant progress has since been made, culminating in the passage of the 2023 clean energy package aimed at achieving 100% clean energy by 2040.
Roos emphasized collaboration among local governments, nonprofits, and businesses to implement the MI Healthy Climate Plan. He pointed out that efforts like the MI Justice 40 Accelerator are crucial for helping disadvantaged communities access federal climate funding. The department’s focus in 2024 includes ramping up local programs that enhance energy accessibility and efficiency.
While concerns about potential federal funding cuts loom, Roos assures that Michigan will continue its climate initiatives regardless of political shifts. With over 99% of peer-reviewed studies confirming human-caused climate change, Roos emphasized the urgency for action: "We still need clean air and resilient infrastructure," he stated.
Roos also highlighted that while federal funds play a crucial role, the state’s ambitious climate goals can proceed independently. With funding stability appearing secure, he expressed confidence in rolling out programs like the home energy rebate initiative, which offers significant financial help for energy efficiency upgrades.
As Michigan forges ahead with its climate goals, it stands as a testament to state-level resolve amidst uncertain federal support.
