Freeze Watch Issued for Michigan on Friday

Freeze Watch Issued for Five Michigan Counties

In a precautionary alert, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a freeze watch for Iosco, Gladwin, Arenac, Mackinac, and Charlevoix counties, effective from midnight to 8 a.m. EDT on Friday. This advisory highlights expected sub-freezing temperatures ranging from the mid-20s to low 30s.

The NWS warns that frost and freeze conditions pose a significant threat to crops and sensitive vegetation, emphasizing the need for residents to take proactive measures to safeguard vulnerable plants. “Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold,” the service advised, noting that such temperatures can be fatal for many species.

Freeze warnings, usually issued from May to October, indicate that temperatures are likely to drop to between 29-32 degrees Fahrenheit. If an area is at risk, a freeze watch may be enacted days in advance to give residents adequate time to prepare.

For those whose homes might be impacted by these frigid temperatures, the NWS recommends moving sensitive plants indoors to shield them from the harsh conditions. Unfortunately, if plants cannot be moved, the likelihood of their survival diminishes significantly under freeze warnings or watches.
