Judge Allows Kohberger’s Family to Attend Trial for Idaho Killings

In a recent ruling, Judge Steven Hippler has allowed Bryan Kohberger’s immediate family members to attend his upcoming trial for the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students, despite the possibility that they might testify. The ruling emphasizes Kohberger’s Sixth Amendment right to a public trial, stating that having family present can serve various purposes: it maintains fair proceedings, reminds officials of their responsibilities, discourages perjury, and encourages witnesses to come forward.

Kohberger, a 30-year-old former graduate student at Washington State University, faces charges related to the murders of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves, which occurred on November 13, 2022. Prosecutors have indicated their intention to pursue the death penalty upon a conviction.

Judge Hippler acknowledged the need to balance Kohberger’s right to a public trial and the state’s interest in obtaining truthful testimony from witnesses. However, he concluded that the presence of Kohberger’s family members would not significantly influence their prospective testimony, as their scope is narrow and they have already participated in recorded interviews. Hippler had previously permitted family members of the victims to attend the trial, highlighting the court’s commitment to ensuring a fair trial process while accommodating the emotional needs of both the defense and the victims’ families. The trial is scheduled to begin in August.
