Bryce Underwood, Future Star Quarterback for Michigan, Draws Early Praise in Big Ten Rankings
Despite not yet taking a collegiate snap, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood is already making waves as one of the top quarterbacks in the Big Ten. The Sporting News’ Bill Bender highlighted Underwood in his latest rankings, a move that has surprised many as attention largely focuses on established players like Penn State’s Drew Allar and UCLA’s Nico Iamaleava.
Michigan’s second-year head coach, Sherrone Moore, will enter the upcoming season with what Bender describes as an enhanced quarterback room. Last year, the Wolverines faced struggles with their quarterback lineup, as Davis Warren, Alex Orji, and Jack Tuttle managed only 12 touchdowns against 13 interceptions, compounded by Warren’s ACL injury in the Reliaquest Bowl.
At 6-foot-4 and weighing 208 pounds, Underwood will compete for the starting position against Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene, who previously faced Michigan in last year’s season opener. In the new rankings, Underwood is positioned sixth, trailing behind top-tier quarterbacks including Allar and Iamaleava, as well as Illinois’ Luke Altmyer, Ohio State’s Julian Sayin, and Nebraska’s Dylan Raiola.
The Belleville, Michigan native made headlines by flipping his commitment from LSU to Michigan, largely influenced by a lucrative NIL package. His four-year deal, reportedly valued at $10.5 million, has the potential to reach up to $12 million with performance bonuses. Underwood was recognized as the top high school quarterback in the class of 2025.
As Michigan prepares for its upcoming season, Underwood will make his debut on August 30 against New Mexico, setting the stage for what could be a transformative year for the Wolverines.
