KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In a dramatic showdown on Wednesday, Western Michigan University’s baseball team claimed a thrilling 6-5 walk-off victory against Michigan State in 12 innings, extending their winning streak to a season-high six games. This win marked the Broncos’ fourth victory against a Power Conference opponent this season.
The game, held at Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field, saw Western Michigan (18-27) trailing 4-2 as they entered the bottom of the ninth. A determined rally began when Avery Thielman drew a vital walk to score an RBI after the bases were loaded. Cooper Hums’ fielder’s choice brought in another run, resulting in a tie game and sending the matchup into extra innings.
Pitching played a crucial role throughout the contest, with Zach Vriesenga starting for WMU and limiting Michigan State (25-22) to just one unearned run over six innings. Turner’s Doran’s exceptional relief work over the 10th and 11th innings kept the score level at 4-4.
In the 12th, Michigan State took the lead again with an unearned run, but the Broncos responded fiercely. After loading the bases with three consecutive walks, Tanner Mally’s infield single tied the game.
