Historic Papal Election Brings Joy to Detroit Catholics
DETROIT – A wave of joy swept through Detroit on Thursday as Cardinal Robert Prevost made history by becoming the first American pope, taking the name Leo XIV. His connection to Michigan, having attended St. Augustine Seminary High School in Holland, adds to the significance of this momentous occasion.
Mary Beth Weichbrodt, a volunteer at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, expressed her excitement, saying, “When he was announced as an American, it was incredible. There’s never been an American Pope.” Cardinal Prevost, 69, was elected on the second day of the papal conclave in Vatican City, marking a watershed moment for the American Catholic Church and changing the global perception of the papacy.
Detroit’s Archbishop Edward Weisenburger, who learned the news shortly after arriving at Detroit Metro Airport, shared his exhilaration, proclaiming, “I was held back by my seat belt from doing my Snoopy dance right there in the aisle of the plane.” His statement reflects the historic significance of the election, suggesting that it signals a shift in church leadership dynamics.
Local clergy are optimistic about the future. Father J.J. Mech of the Cathedral praised Pope Leo XIV’s missionary background, emphasizing a collaborative approach to faith. “You learn from the people and they teach you,” he noted. Archbishop Weisenburger described the new pontiff as a theological moderate, with potential for bridging divides within the church.
Christine Jiddou, another local Catholic, expressed hope for a resurgence in American Catholicism under Prevost’s leadership. While challenges may arise, the community remains hopeful. A Thanksgiving Mass to honor Pope Leo XIV is scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
