Michigan House Encourages Local Governments to Adopt ‘Gulf of America’ Name

House Republicans Push for "Gulf of America" Name Change in Michigan

In a recent resolution, House Republicans in Michigan are advocating for state and local governments to officially use the term “Gulf of America” in place of “Gulf of Mexico” by July 4. The resolution, passed on May 7 by voice vote, aligns with a directive from President Donald Trump, who renamed the Gulf in recognition of its economic significance to the U.S.

State Rep. Matt Maddock, the resolution’s sponsor, emphasized the positive spirit behind the name change, stating, “Let’s give America more to be proud of, and our great veterans deserve this, too.” He expressed hopes that children vacationing in the area would joyfully declare, “Look, mom. I’m in the Gulf of America.”

Originally, Maddock proposed a bill mandating this name change, but it was taken off the House agenda due to concerns about support from House Republicans, who narrowly control the chamber. According to Republican House Speaker Matt Hall’s spokesperson, the decision was influenced by potential opposition from the Democratic-majority Senate. The resolution avoids this complication, allowing the House’s intentions to remain clear without requiring Senate approval.

Critics from the Democratic side, including Rep. Jennifer Conlin, argue that the focus should be on more pressing issues affecting Michiganders, pointing out the disconnect between such discussions and the realities faced by constituents.

Emphasizing a battle for national identity, Maddock referenced previous name changes, arguing for a forward-looking America. Following the Michigan House’s resolution, the U.S. House also passed a bill to formalize the Gulf of America name change, further solidifying the initiative at the federal level.
