Matt Hoffman: A Key Figure in Rebuilding Michigan’s Men’s Golf Program
ANN ARBOR, MI — Matt Hoffman is entering his sixth season as the Director of Sports Performance for the University of Michigan men’s golf team, bringing a robust background in Kinesiology and exercise science. His expertise in biomechanics allows him to craft tailored performance plans that enhance the capabilities of student-athletes.
Hoffman, who played professionally for six years on the PGA Tour Canada and various U.S. mini-tours, combines his competitive experience with coaching, previously serving as an assistant at Humber College, where he helped lead the Hawks to two Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) titles.
Navigating the challenges posed by COVID-19, Hoffman, alongside U-M coach Zach Barlow, successfully revitalized the Wolverine program despite significant disruptions during the 2020-2021 seasons. Over the last three years, under their guidance, the team has achieved an impressive record of 18 top-five finishes in 35 events, capturing four team titles, including the 2023 Big Ten Match Play Championship.
Notably, Hunter Thomson played a pivotal role in the match play title, finishing with a perfect 4-0 record. The program has also celebrated individual accomplishments, with five medalist honors and several players earning All-Big Ten accolades, including Brent Ito and Thomson.
In addition to developing competitive skills, Hoffman emphasizes academic success, with 32 Academic All-Big Ten certificates awarded to players. His commitment to player development extends beyond golf, focusing on both their athletic and academic journeys.
Hoffman’s leadership and experience are instrumental as the Wolverines continue to build on their recent successes, aiming for further accolades and appearances in NCAA tournaments in the future.
