Pontiac Nonprofit Launches Initiative to Empower Transitioning Foster Youth through Homeownership
PONTIAC, Mich. – A local nonprofit organization, Chosen Kingdom Builders, is embarking on a groundbreaking initiative to aid young adults aging out of the foster care system by providing them with the opportunity to become homeowners at no cost. In collaboration with Creek Valley Properties, the nonprofit plans to develop 22 furnished manufactured homes specifically designed for former foster youth, addressing the pressing issue of homelessness among this vulnerable population.
Statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reveal that over 365,000 children were in the foster care system on any given day in 2022. In Michigan alone, approximately 1,600 young people transition out of the system each year, with many waiting up to three years for adoption—a day that may never come.
Kwanzel Howerton, founder and director of Chosen Kingdom Builders, emphasized the unique challenges these youth face. “They’re often provided with resources, but not the guidance on how to utilize them, leading to high rates of homelessness as they reach their 20s.”
Each home, spanning 1,300 square feet, will include three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a detached garage, with expected occupancy in about four months. Excitement is palpable as Justin Ibe, managing partner of Creek Valley Properties, shared how they have navigated the complex process of construction approvals with local authorities.
Beyond housing, Chosen Kingdom Builders will offer vital support services such as financial literacy training and workforce development, aiming to empower residents to take charge of their futures. Howerton stated, “Our goal is to reframe their mindset and teach them how to use the resources effectively.”
This initiative promises not only to provide shelter but also to instill hope and direction in the lives of young adults transitioning out of foster care.
