Changes Announced for Michigan High School Athletics
GAYLORD, MI – The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) has unveiled several significant updates for high school sports during its annual spring meeting, held last weekend in Gaylord.
Among the most notable changes is the introduction of a boys volleyball season, set to kick off in spring 2026, along with the awarding of district and regional championships for girls wrestling teams. This inclusion marks a momentous step for male participation in volleyball at the high school level.
The MHSAA reviewed 22 proposals surrounding essential aspects such as eligibility requirements for students transferring between districts and new definitions pertaining to scrimmage parameters. From now on, statistics from scrimmages will not count towards win-loss records for teams or individual players, ensuring clearer distinctions between practices and official games.
Changes to eligibility rules stipulate that student-athletes must complete a minimum of 180 school days at their new institution before they can return to their previous district. Similarly, athletes’ former residences must be secured through a long-term rental or lease of at least 12 months.
Additional sport-specific updates have also been approved:
- Baseball: Players can compete at multiple levels in a single day within the constraints of a 38-game season.
- Bowling: Practices can now commence three weeks before Thanksgiving.
- Football: Teams forfeiting games will no longer receive playoff points, tightening competitive integrity.
- Tennis: New provisions allow ties at regional competitions to advance to finals, while continuous coaching between games will now be permitted.
The latest revisions are a proactive move by the MHSAA aimed at enhancing fairness and competitive balance across Michigan high school athletics. For more details, visit the MHSAA’s official website.
