Millennium Park Playground Renovation Underway in Kent County
KENT COUNTY, MI – Millennium Park, renowned as one of the largest urban parks in the nation, is set to enhance its playground facilities as two of its three large play structures undergo significant renovations. Kent County Parks Director Ben Swayze reported that these updates will revitalize the park’s recreation core area, which sees the highest usage among the county’s playgrounds.
Spanning 1,400 acres, Millennium Park features a 6-acre beach, nearly 18 miles of cross-country skiing and biking trails, and ample natural hiking areas. The park plays a crucial role in the ambitious reclamation project aimed at transforming 1,500 acres of heavily trafficked lands between Johnson Park in Walker and John Ball Park in Grand Rapids into public recreational spaces.
The playground renovations arrive as the existing structures approach the end of their typical 20-year lifespan. Swayze emphasized the excitement of introducing new and unique features that will set Millennium Park apart from other county playgrounds. The upgrades cater to children of varying ages, replacing facilities for both 3-to-5-year-olds and 5-to-12-year-olds.
The total cost of the project is nearly $500,000 and will be funded through the park’s endowment and competitive capital improvement project dollars. Construction is currently in progress, with an expected completion date around Memorial Day.
