Michigan Women’s Tennis Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals with Dramatic 4-3 Win Over Texas
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan’s women’s tennis team, ranked No. 3 in the nation, secured a thrilling 4-3 victory over No. 14 Texas in the NCAA Tournament Super Regional at the Varsity Tennis Center on Saturday, May 10. The win propels Michigan to the quarterfinals, where they will face No. 20 Oklahoma State on May 15 in Waco, Texas.
Despite losing the doubles point, Michigan rallied in singles play, with Julia Fliegner and Lily Jones battling their way through tense matches after finding themselves down 3-2. Jones, competing at No. 3, initially faced adversity but ultimately clinched a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 win over No. 73 Eszter Meri. After a rocky start in the third set, Jones powered through to secure Michigan’s third point.
Fliegner’s match at No. 1 was equally gripping. After a back-and-forth contest, she prevailed against No. 45 Sabina Zeynalova in a nail-biting tiebreak, winning 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(1) to seal the team’s success. Earlier in singles, Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde each captured dominant victories, leveling the match at key moments.
Michigan’s doubles performance began with a tough loss, as Texas took the lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. However, the Wolverines showed resilience in singles, ultimately winning four out of six matches.
This victory marks Michigan’s third consecutive appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals and is a testament to their determination and skill. The Wolverines, now boasting a record of 26-4, look to continue their tournament run against Oklahoma State later this week.
