Michigan Lawmaker’s Prank Sparks Controversy and Consequences
LANSING, MI — Democratic Representative Julie Brixie of Meridian Township faced backlash after playing a prank on Republican colleague Matt Maddock, who she accused of parking in her designated spot at the Capitol. The incident occurred on April 17 when Maddock parked his BMW across two spaces, one of which belonged to Brixie. In response, she wrapped the car in plastic wrap, a move that has since resulted in her receiving disciplinary measures.
According to a House Republican official, Brixie’s speaking privileges have been revoked, and her parking spot has been relocated as a consequence of the prank. The penalties, which will remain in effect for the foreseeable future, were first reported by State Affairs.
Brixie explained her motives, stating, “My good colleague from the 51st district parked in two spots… I Saran Wrapped it to give it an extra layer of protection.” Following the incident, she attempted to draw attention to the situation on the House floor, announcing, “There’s a black BMW… your lights are on and your engine is running. Thank you.”
Maddock, on his part, responded humorously on social media, asserting, “She keeps trying to get my attention and I keep telling her I’m married.” However, he later expressed dissatisfaction with Brixie’s actions and her voting record, emphasizing a lack of apologies, and stated, “Democrats get to crime and never say sorry.”
Maddock’s wife, Meshawn, a former state Republican co-chair, criticized Brixie publicly, calling her actions a "lie" and indicative of a broader lack of accountability among Democrats. This controversy adds to the tensions between Michigan’s political factions as the state grapples with ongoing issues in governance.
