Texas Women’s Tennis Falls to Michigan in NCAA Super Regional Heartbreaker
Ann Arbor, Mich. – In a thrilling NCAA Super Regional showdown, the No. 14 Texas Women’s Tennis team narrowly lost to No. 3 Michigan, 4-3, on Saturday at the Varsity Tennis Center, concluding their season with an overall record of 18-11 and a fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA round of 16.
Texas initially seized the doubles point, winning matches at the No. 3 and No. 1 positions after Michigan took an early lead at No. 2. Freshman Ariana Anazagasty-Pursoo and partner Ashton Bowers clinched the doubles point with a hard-fought 7-5 victory over Michigan’s duo of Jessica Bernales and Lily Jones.
As the singles matches unfolded, Michigan quickly leveled the score after Texas’ Carmen Herea was defeated 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2. However, Anazagasty-Pursoo quickly rallied for Texas, winning 6-1, 6-3 against Bernales. As the tension grew, Texas briefly regained the lead when Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz claimed victory at No. 5, but Michigan capitalized on three-set matches at No. 1 and No. 3.
The top singles match featured a nail-biting finish with Michigan’s Julia Fliegner edging out Texas’ Sabina Zeynalova in a tiebreaker, sealing the match for the Wolverines. Zeynalova displayed resilience, fending off multiple match points to extend the match into a third set.
Despite the heartbreaking result, Texas demonstrated promise throughout the season, showcasing their ability to compete at a high level.
