Saginaw Set to Transform Old Fairgrounds into New Park
Saginaw, MI – A historic transformation is underway as Saginaw City Hall officials finalize negotiations to acquire the former Saginaw County Fairgrounds, now slated for redevelopment into a new public park. City Planning Director Cassi Zimmerman announced plans for a 1-acre park on the site, complemented by efforts to secure grant funding for its development.
The 52-acre property, which has stood dormant for over two decades, was once a bustling hub for fairs and community events. However, it has been marred by abandoned structures, culminating in last year’s demolition funded by federal stimulus monies. The only remnant of its vibrant past, a historic gateway entrance recognized in 2015, is currently undergoing roof repairs—a project expected to conclude shortly.
Zimmerman expressed pride in leading the project, which will progress with the construction of the new park scheduled for completion next year. Plans include restoring the gateway’s brickwork, adding decorative gates, establishing a parking area, and enhancing the landscape with proper lighting and historical kiosks. Additional amenities may follow with future funding.
Despite the Saginaw Housing Commission owning the fairgrounds since 2001, the site has long suffered from bureaucratic hurdles, including a significant debt to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Recent collaboration with U.S. Senators and Congressman Dan Kildee helped clear red tape, allowing redevelopment initiatives to move forward.
Once a vibrant venue hosting over 350,000 annual fairgoers, the fairgrounds saw its last event in 2005. The effort to revive this historic area represents a significant step in revitalizing Saginaw and restoring community pride. As negotiations conclude, anticipation builds for a renewed connection to the city’s storied past.
