Ten Michigan 4-H Volunteers Celebrated for 50 Years of Service

In a heartfelt celebration, Michigan State University Extension honors ten dedicated volunteers for their exceptional half-century of service to Michigan 4-H in 2025. These individuals have dedicated their heads, hearts, and hands to enriching the lives of youth and supporting communities through the flagship youth development program offered by MSU Extension.

"Without the commitment of our caring volunteers, Michigan 4-H would not exist," stated Quentin Tyler, MSU Extension Director. “These ten deserve special recognition for their extraordinary contributions over five decades.”

Michigan 4-H provides youth aged five to 19 with valuable experiential learning opportunities that cultivate essential life skills. Volunteers play a crucial role, guiding participants through various programs, including after-school activities, summer camps, and community events. Their involvement not only offers practical skills but also positions them as vital adult role models, preparing youth to face future challenges.

"Michigan 4-H fosters a generation equipped for today and tomorrow,” said Jodi Schulz, State Leader for Michigan 4-H Youth Development. "These honorees have profoundly impacted countless lives, and we express our heartfelt appreciation for their unwavering dedication."

The distinguished 50-year volunteers recognized include Cheryl Barton (Shiawassee), Linda Bogue (Cass), Lisa Coe (Barry), Janel Horrocks-Boehmer (Ingham), Sharon Mitchell (St. Joseph), Vanessa Powell (Jackson), Diane Shepherd (Sanilac), Paul Shoup (Mason), Bernadette Strahl (Menominee), and Marla Wedge (Allegan).

In gratitude, each volunteer will receive a token of appreciation and a personal note from MSU Extension leadership. “While we may never fully grasp the number of youth they’ve impacted, we know their contributions are invaluable,” remarked Lisa Bottomley, co-director of children and youth programs.

To honor these volunteers, tribute gifts can be made to support 4-H initiatives. For more information on volunteering with Michigan 4-H, visit extension.msu.edu/4H.
