Western Michigan University Athletics Shines in Learfield Director’s Cup Standings
Kalamazoo, Mich. – Western Michigan University Athletics is celebrating a stellar performance in the latest Learfield Director’s Cup standings, placing first in the Mid-American Conference (MAC), second among Group of 5 schools, and 69th overall for the 2024-25 winter season.
Dan Bartholomae, Vice President and Director of Athletics, expressed pride in the department’s achievements. "After an historic 2023-24 season, we are thrilled with the exceptional results of our Fall and Winter sports programs," he remarked. "It is invigorating to see the community come together to support our programs, helping us sustain this level of success for years to come."
The winter season continued the momentum generated by a successful fall, where all five WMU sports qualified for NCAA tournaments. The highlights of the winter season include:
- Ice Hockey made history by winning its first NCAA National Championship, alongside securing both the NCHC Regular Season and Tournament Championships for the first time.
- Men’s Basketball reached the MAC Tournament for the second consecutive season.
- Women’s Basketball matched this achievement by making its second straight appearance in the MAC Tournament.
- Gymnastics saw three individual athletes compete at the NCAA Regional Championship in Alabama.
These achievements underscore Western Michigan’s commitment to athletic excellence and competitive spirit. The Learfield Directors’ Cup, a ranking system established by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today, evaluates collegiate athletic departments based on their performance in NCAA Championships, awarding points for postseason finishes.
As WMU looks forward, it aims to build on its current success and elevate its standing in collegiate athletics.
