Press Release: Arctic Grayling Making a Comeback in Northern Michigan
EMMET COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) – After years of dedicated conservation efforts, the Arctic grayling is set to make a triumphant return to northern Michigan. A ceremonial launch at the Oden Fish Hatchery marked the beginning of the reintroduction process, with officials from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) celebrating this significant ecological milestone.
The journey began in 2019 when the DNR received nearly 5,000 grayling eggs from Alaska. Now, approximately 400,000 eggs will be strategically placed in local rivers with the aim of revitalizing the species. The eggs will be housed in specialized remote site incubators—five-gallon buckets designed to keep the hatchlings safe during their most vulnerable early stages.
Aaron Switzer, Fish Production Program Manager at the Michigan DNR, explained the innovative setup. "We pipe water from upstream into these buckets, providing a safe habitat with substrate," he said. This allows the eggs to hatch while absorbing their yolk sac, minimizing exposure to predators until they are ready to enter the river.
Local tribes have been entrusted with distributing the eggs to the Manistee, Maple, and Boardman-Ottaway rivers, ensuring community involvement in this historic initiative. The significance of this reintroduction cannot be overstated; the last wild Arctic grayling was caught nearly 100 years ago, making this effort pivotal for the species’ survival in the region.
With the collaboration of local tribes and conservationists, the DNR aims to restore the Arctic grayling population and enhance the ecological health of Michigan’s waterways. This reestablishment marks a hopeful chapter in the ongoing story of wildlife recovery in northern Michigan.
