Former Rep. Mike Rogers Launches Senate Campaign in Michigan
Former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) has officially announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate, marking his entry as the first major Republican candidate in the competitive 2026 race. With Sen. Gary Peters retiring, the Michigan seat is poised to become a crucial battleground as Republicans aim to expand their Senate majority.
Rogers, who narrowly lost to Democrat Elissa Slotkin in the 2022 election, spoke about his commitment to Michigan and his alignment with Donald Trump in a video release. He stated, “As your next senator, I won’t just represent Michigan. I’ll fight for it. I’ll stand with President Trump and we will deliver on the mandate given to him by the American people.” While it’s uncertain if he will secure Trump’s endorsement this time—having received it during a crowded primary last year—Rogers has gained early support from key Senate GOP leaders, including Majority Leader John Thune and NRSC Chairman Tim Scott.
However, Roger’s path may not be devoid of challenges. He could face a contested primary as Tudor Dixon, the GOP candidate for governor in 2022, and Rep. Bill Huizenga consider their own Senate bids.
On the Democratic side, the competition is heating up. State Sen. Mallory McMorrow has announced her campaign, and Rep. Haley Stevens is contemplating a run. Additionally, Abdul El-Sayed, the former Wayne County health director, is expected to make his decision soon.
Rogers, who previously served in the House since 2000 and chaired the House Intelligence Committee, did not seek re-election last year. His return to the political stage signals a significant push for Republicans in a pivotal election cycle.
