A judge is set to consider a bail request from Gerhardt Konig, a Maui anesthesiologist facing attempted murder charges for allegedly attacking his wife on a Honolulu hiking trail. Konig, 46, who has pleaded not guilty, has been held without bail since his indictment on March 28. His wife has accused him of attempting to push her off a cliff, trying to inject her with a syringe, and hitting her with a rock during a hike on March 24, which was part of her birthday celebration. Following the incident, she petitioned for a temporary restraining order and filed for divorce.
In defending his bail request, Konig’s attorneys cited his lack of prior criminal convictions, stable employment, and family commitments in Hawaii. However, prosecutors oppose the bail, highlighting that he could face life imprisonment and attempted to flee the scene after the alleged attack. They stated Konig contacted his son, disclosed his actions, and sought to evade the police, hiding in bushes until nightfall. When apprehended, he reportedly expressed surprise that his wife was not dead.
The couple’s hike occurred on a closed trail, known as Pali Puka, which poses safety risks. The wife reported feeling uneasy during the hike and was soon physically assaulted by Konig, who reportedly became aggressive and threatening. Witnesses observed the attack and called 911, leading to police intervention. After the attack, his wife required surgery for severe head injuries. A protective order has since been put in place requiring Konig to stay away from her and their children.
