Press Release: Michigan Farmers Urge Lawmakers to Address Labor Shortages
Washington, D.C. – During a recent visit to the nation’s capital, representatives from the Michigan Farm Bureau engaged lawmakers on pressing issues facing the state’s agriculture sector, particularly the dire labor shortages that threaten the viability of many farms.
Jodi DeHate, Missaukee County’s Farm Bureau President, highlighted the significant changes in labor dynamics since the COVID-19 pandemic. Early retirements among the Baby Boomer generation and evolving family structures have left numerous agricultural positions unfilled. The shift in priorities among younger Americans, who increasingly favor education and training over immediate employment, has exacerbated the labor shortage in farming.
Despite innovation in farming practices, such as the adoption of automation and robotic technology, many U.S. citizens remain unwilling to fill agricultural roles. Farmers have increasingly turned to the H-2A program, which facilitates the hiring of temporary migrant workers. However, associated costs have skyrocketed, making it unsustainable for many farms. The wage formula for H-2A workers has surged by 50% over the past decade, with a 26% increase since 2020.
Michigan’s rich agricultural diversity is under threat. Farmers reliant on H-2A labor are abandoning specialty crops—representative of the state’s unique offerings—to switch to less labor-intensive options like corn and soybeans. This shift not only diminishes local food resiliency but poses an economic risk with potential losses estimated at $5.2 billion.
As the U.S. becomes increasingly dependent on food imports—60% of fruit and 40% of fresh vegetables—advocates are calling for policy changes to support Michigan’s farmers. For those interested in supporting local agriculture, visit ProtectOurProduce.com.
