Broadway Composer Charles Strouse, Known for ‘Annie’ and ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ Passes Away at 96

Charles Strouse, the acclaimed three-time Tony Award-winning composer, passed away at 96 in New York City. Renowned for his contributions to Broadway, Strouse was the mastermind behind iconic musicals such as “Annie,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” and “Applause.” His career, lasting over five decades, included composing theme songs, notably “Those Were the Days” for the sitcom “All in the Family.”

Strouse’s Broadway journey began with “Bye Bye Birdie” in 1960, a collaboration with lyricist Lee Adams and librettist Michael Stewart. The musical, about an Elvis-like crooner drafted into the Army, initially faced funding challenges until Texas oilman L. Slade Brown helped secure financial backing after hearing Strouse’s captivating score.

Despite experiencing both successes and failures in his career, Strouse’s music resonated deeply with audiences. “Annie,” created in 1977, stands out as his most enduring work, boasting over 2,300 performances and featuring memorable songs like “Tomorrow” and “It’s the Hard Knock Life.” The show has seen multiple revivals and adaptations, including a film and a live television version.

Strouse’s influence extended beyond musical theater; he provided scores for films like “Bonnie and Clyde,” and his songs found their way into contemporary hits, including Jay-Z’s “Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life.” Even towards the end of his life, Strouse remained engaged with his work, attending productions of his musicals and connecting with cast members. His generosity and passion for music were celebrated by those who knew him, ensuring his legacy would endure in the world of theater. He is survived by four children, following the death of his wife, Barbara, in 2023.
