April’s Teapot Dome Café Celebrates a Century of Service in Van Buren County
PAW PAW TOWNSHIP, MI – The historic Teapot Dome café, situated along the busy route between Detroit and Chicago, marks 100 years of serving hearty meals and baked goods. Initially opened by Chris Henderson in the wake of America’s infamous Teapot Dome scandal, the café has evolved from a service station to a beloved local eatery.
Today, under the ownership of April Sheeran, who has been at the helm for a decade, the café remains a staple for the community. Open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., April’s Teapot Dome offers a warm ambiance and home-cooked meals, including crowd favorites like the Southern Omelette topped with homemade sausage gravy. Regulars, such as retired truck driver Ken Troyer, come not just for the food, but for the sense of community that Sheeran fosters.
The café’s charm is enhanced by its collection of 180 teapots displayed throughout, many of which hold personal significance for local patrons. Sheeran aims to keep the spirit of the café alive, having received an interest-free loan from local farmers to ensure its continued operation after the pandemic’s financial strain.
With plans for succession in place, Sheeran envisions passing the café to 25-year-old Alexis Disbrow, ensuring that its rich history and community connection endure. The café not only serves meals but also acts as a gathering spot for locals, with a prayer board and regular visits from local pastors, reinforcing its role as a cherished community hub.
For those interested in experiencing a blend of history and hospitality, April’s Teapot Dome stands ready to serve, ensuring that its legacy carries on well into the future.
