Chris Brown Faces Charges in the U.K. for Alleged Assault in 2023

Singer and rapper Chris Brown was charged on Thursday in the U.K. with grievous bodily harm with intent, following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police of London. The charge is related to an alleged assault that took place at a nightclub in Hanover Square on February 19, 2023. Brown was taken into custody and is scheduled to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning. Initially, a man was arrested at a Manchester hotel shortly after 2 a.m. on Thursday for suspicion of grievous bodily harm, but his identity was not disclosed until the recent charge.

Brown has a long history of legal issues, including a notable 2009 arrest for assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna, for which he pleaded guilty to felony assault. In 2013, he was involved in a physical altercation with singer Frank Ocean, during which he reportedly threatened to shoot him. Additionally, in 2017, his ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran was granted a five-year restraining order against him.

More recently, Brown faced allegations in 2022 of drugging and raping a woman on a yacht in 2020, although this lawsuit was dismissed due to a lack of prosecution. Despite his legal troubles, Brown is set to embark on a European tour with performances scheduled in the U.K. in June.

NBC News has reached out for comments from Brown’s representatives regarding the latest charges. The unfolding situation highlights the ongoing scrutiny and challenges faced by the artist amidst his turbulent legal history.
