Photos released by the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office reveal details about the escape of 10 inmates from a New Orleans jail. The images show a large, rectangular hole, partially covered by metal bars, cut behind a toilet and sink in a cell at the Orleans Parish Justice Center. Notably, horizontal bars that should secure the top of the opening appear to be missing. The jail’s interior reflects chaos, with messages left by the inmates around the hole, such as “To Easy Lol” and “We Innocent.”
There is uncertainty regarding whether the inmates created the escape route or merely took advantage of a pre-existing defect. Additional photos depict the toilet dislodged from its position with pipes disconnected, hinting at how the inmates might have altered their environment to facilitate escape.
During a news conference, Sheriff Susan Hutson indicated that the escape was likely made possible by defective locks on the jail cells. Inmates reportedly disrupted cell fixtures around 12:23 a.m., allowing them to break open a door and flee around 1 a.m. through the hole in the wall, scale a perimeter wall, and run across a busy road. The escape was discovered during a routine headcount at 8:30 a.m.
Authorities have apprehended one escapee, Kendall Myles, in the French Quarter following a brief foot chase. Meanwhile, the nine remaining fugitives are considered armed and dangerous, and investigations are ongoing to determine if any outside assistance facilitated their escape.
