Mackinac Bridge Construction Delayed by Unseasonably Early Weather

Lane Closures Expected on Mackinac Bridge This Memorial Day Weekend Due to Delayed Repairs

MACKINAC BRIDGE, MI – Weather-related delays in the ongoing repaving and modular joint replacement project on the Mackinac Bridge will impact traffic during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. The work, primarily affected by cold and rainy conditions earlier this season, has pushed back the completion date to May 29, 2025, a week later than initially anticipated.

Crews have successfully replaced half of the modular joint over Pier 334 at the start of the north viaduct span and repaved the southbound lanes. However, the installation of the remaining half on the northbound lanes is still pending. “We worked with the contractor to ensure that the planned work could be completed prior to the Memorial Day weekend,” stated Bridge Director Kim Nowack. “Unfortunately, poor weather conditions delayed the start and extended the modular joint installation process.”

As a result, lane closures will be in effect throughout the holiday weekend, which is expected to see a significant increase in traffic volumes. The Mackinac Bridge Authority advises drivers to consider crossing during off-peak hours—specifically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.—to minimize potential delays.

Despite last year’s construction challenges, which did not result in significant backups, officials remain hopeful for smooth traffic flow this year. Following Memorial Day, further deck repairs and repaving on the southbound side will be scheduled as part of a separate project.

For travelers planning to cross, the bridge authority encourages patience, with crews working diligently to complete the repairs and reopen lanes as swiftly as possible.
